About Us

Our Mission

The Shelton House Museum is committed to preserving its historic property and grounds while showcasing regional heritage crafts and history.

Our Collections

Our museum aims to celebrate, showcase, and preserve the history and heritage of our region. Each of our collections highlight regional history and art. The Shelton Collection includes items belonging to the Shelton family, for whom the house was built, and pieces from the time period in which they lived. The Native American Collection includes handcrafted items from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), The Navajo Nation, The Sioux Nation, The Hopi, and The Acoma. The Mary Cornwell Collection includes personal items belonging to our museum's founder, Mary Cornwell, as well as pieces by artists and artisans from the Village of Yesteryear. We have extensive craft collections for the following mediums: quilts, weaving, textiles, woodwork, pottery, glass, and toys. Our John C. Campbell Folk School Collection consists of a variety of folk toys and artistic pieces crafted by students of the Folk School, the oldest and largest folk school in the country. Last, but certainly not least, our Regional Heritage and History Collection includes items of historical significance to our region, from Civil War items to photographs, newspapers, and farming equipment.

No matter what your interest in our region is, we have a collection for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@sheltonhouse.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Our grounds are open for you to enjoy all year, but the museum and barn are open for the season from the first of May through the end of October. The hours for our open season are Thursday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

During our season of operation (May-October, Thursday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), tours of the house begin at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00. The tours last an hour and are fully guided. Ticket purchases are made in the Carriage House Gift Shop. We accept cash and card, and the ticket prices are as follows:

  • Adults: $10/person
  • Seniors (55+) and Veterans: $7/person
  • Students and children over 5: $5/person
  • Group tickets for parties of 10 or more: $5/person
  • Children under 5: Free

Additionally, we offer ticket bundles for tours of the Shelton House and the Shook-Smathers house in Clyde (just over 10 minutes from the Shelton House)! For $16/person, you can receive tickets for a museum tour on our property and a ticket to tour the Museum of Haywood County History at the Shook-Smathers House.

Unfortunately, the Shelton House does not have an elevator inside. However, we will soon have a video tour available for visitors who are unable to go up the stairs. We also have chairs placed throughout the house to sit in if you need a moment to rest your legs.

YES! We have scavenger hunt worksheets available for child visitors to the museum to help keep the tours engaging. At the end of tours, a complete scavenger hunt sheet is rewarded with a prize from our treasure box!

Even though our museum and barn have a set season of operation, you are free to enjoy our grounds year-round. We have tables and chairs on the property for picnics, enjoying a good book, and whatever else your heart may desire! Our grounds are beautiful, and we love seeing our community come out to enjoy them.

Our gardens are beautiful thanks to our wonderful, dedicated volunteers from the Waynesville Garden Club and the Mountain View Garden Club! Our Pollinator Garden is tended to by Carol Litchfield, and the Dahlia Garden is maintained by Joel and Dale Shelton Reece.
