William Taylor Shelton worked with the Navajo in Shiprock, New Mexico for decades prior to returning to his family home, which stands on land historically belonging to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). The Shelton family and the land on which the house stands have particularly deep ties with Navajo and EBCI history; as such, honoring these histories and the traditions of the Navajo and EBCI is of utmost importance to us. Our Native American Collection contains craft items from EBCI crafters and Navajo crafters, as well as pieces William Shelton received during his time in Shiprock. Along with Navajo and EBCI pieces, we also have items from the Sioux, the Hopi, and the Acoma.
Our EBCI items consist of woodwork, jewelry, and dolls, as well as several books. The pieces we have represent artists from several time periods, from the 1800s to the 2010s. The Navajo items we have are primarily from William Shelton's time in Shiprock, with the exception of woven pieces from modern crafters. We have samples of Sioux beadwork and Acoma water vessels, too.
